Contactless payments update

There are now more than 30 million cards in the UK enabled with contactless® technology and over 140,000 retailer card machines in the UK capable of accepting contactless® transactions.

The contactless® limit was raised on the 1st June 2012 from £15 to £20. Contactless® makes it easier and faster for your customers to make card payments up to £20 without having to enter their PIN.

Contactless® cards can be identified by the Contactless® logo contactless logo displayed on the card.

Cardholders simply wave their Contactless® enabled card over a Contactless® enabled device and the transaction is taken securely, in less than a second, speeding up transaction times.

What are the benefits of accepting Contactless payments?

  • Faster service: With payments completed in less than a second, you can serve your customers faster, cut queues and reduce lost sales.
  • Simple for staff: Reduces the need to request PINs, making payment simple for staff and quicker for customers.
  • No need for authorisation or receipts: Although authorisation is not requested for Contactless® transactions, as part of the security systems for this type of transaction, to protect both you and your customers, on occasion the Contactless® transaction will prompt for a Chip and PIN transaction to be made. Cardholder receipts can be produced should a customer ask for one.
  • Reduce cash dependence: Counting, securely transporting and banking notes and coins can be expensive. Contactless® can help break your cash dependency.

Payments using mobile phones and FOBs

Contactless® technology is constantly evolving and there are now an increasing number of prepaid Contactless® devices available such as mobile phones and FOB’s. These work in the same way as a card by waving the phone or FOB over the Contactless® enabled acceptance device. Further information on these types of devices is available at

How can I accept Contactless transactions?

If you would like to accept Contactless® transactions, your point of sale equipment will need to be enabled to accept these types of transaction. Lloyds Bank Cardnet offers the following card machines with contactless® capability:

  • Ingenico iCT250 Desktop device
  • Ingenico iCT220 Desktop device + IPP350 PIN - pad
  • Ingenico iWL252 Portable Bluetooth device
  • Ingenico 930 GCC Mobile GPRS device
